NHLBI HEALTHY HEART RECIPES

Fresh herbs add flavor--so you can use less salt.

6 tomatoes, preferably Roma (or 3 large tomatoes)
1/2 medium onion, finely chopped
1 clove garlic, finely minced
2 serrano or jalapeno peppers, finely chopped
3 tablespoons cilantro, chopped
juice of 1 lime
1/8 teaspoon oregano, finely crushed
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1/2 avocado, diced (black skin)

1. Combine all of the ingredients in a glass bowl.
2. Serve immediately or refrigerate and serve within 4 or 5 hours.

Yield: 8 servings

It's Football Season


You can smell it in the air, you can see it all around, it's that time of year again; It's football season.

Whether you like college football, the NFL or both, it's time to break out the face paint, the foam fingers,
and the old pigskin, because football season is upon us. If you're like millions of fans, you've been waiting anxiously since the end of last season for this season to begin. There is nothing like BBQ, some chips and dip and a little football.

Like the commercial says, I vow to watch football on Saturdays and Sundays ... and Mondays........and sometimes on Thursdays.

Debit Fraud Can Cost You - How to Answer the "Debit or Credit?" Dilemma

RISMEDIA -Will that be credit or debit? It’s a simple question. But there are many things to consider beyond whether it’s quicker to punch in your PIN number or sign the receipt. With many reports showing that debit cards are gaining popularity over credit cards, it’s important to know which card to choose and why. Here are some things to consider:

- Risk. The increased use in debit cards increases the possibility of exposing your bank account to identity theft. There’s a similar threat with credit cards, but there is a significant difference in how the two cases are resolved, said Curtis Arnold, director of CardRatings.com.

If someone steals your credit card and runs it up to the limit, resolving the matter may require some phones calls and a written complaint. In the meantime, you can use another credit card or a debit card to cover expenses.

“However, when a checking account has been compromised, you have a real ripple affect,” Arnold said. If someone cleans out your bank account, you have to worry about outstanding checks, automatic drafts, insufficient funds fees, closing the bank account, setting up new bill payment drafts and other things. “Eventually it will be taken care of. But it gets to be a real headache,” he said. If you use a debit card every day, check your bank balance regularly.

- Protection. Credit cards typically provide greater protection against fraudulent charges or in disputes with merchants. “With credit cards, you got this float time,” said Bill Hardekopf, CEO of LowCards.com. “You haven’t paid for anything if all of a sudden you don’t get the item delivered to you or it turns out not to work.”

If the charge is fraudulent, under federal law, you are liable for no more than $50 with a credit card. With a debit card, you are liable for a maximum of $50 if you report it in two days. After two days, liability jumps to $500. Wait 60 days and you can be stuck with the entire amount.

In some cases, Hardekopf said you’ll have to prove to the bank that the charges were fraudulent. That means time and hassles before you get the money back into your account. Credit card companies will credit your account while they investigate the charge.

- Costs. Many people like to swipe their debit card for small purchases, but those little amounts can add up by the end of the month. If you’re not careful, you will overdraw your account and incur hefty fees.

- Rewards. Using a debit card could cause you to miss out on reward points that credit cards offer. Some debit cards offer reward programs if you sign for your purchases. They do so in part because merchants are charged higher transaction fees for credit purchases.

Four Tips for Buying Foreclosures

RISMEDIA -Foreclosed houses are everywhere you turn in this market. But while their sticker prices are low, buying one can be a risky endeavor. This is mainly because you won’t have the same protections as you would for a conventional house.

From Consumer Reports magazine, here are four ways you can protect yourself if you’re in the market for a foreclosed home:

1. Don’t pay a fee for property listings. You can find free information on foreclosed homes in your area by checking with a local agent. Usually there will be someone who specializes in foreclosed properties at the broker’s office. This person is a great free resource.

2. Invest in a home inspection. This is always a good idea whenever you buy a house, but for a foreclosed property it is especially the case. The property may have been vandalized. Fixtures and appliances may be missing. Also, with utilities shut off it will be impossible to test for the water pressure in the shower. Try to arrange for the utilities to be turned on before you buy. The inspection will cost between $250 and $400, but it will end up saving you if there is a problem with the home’s structure or its systems.

3. Don’t assume the sale is final. In some states, a homeowner may have up to 180 days after the foreclosure to pay any outstanding debts and reclaim the home even if it has been bought by someone else.

4. Buy some title insurance. The title insurance will protect you against any liens that you might not know about. It will also prevent a previous owner from making a successful claim on the house after you buy it.
